Newton and I are still out of the country. We've been well lately, but I hear things are not as ideal for those forced into attendance at the Seminar. How are you?

Dr. Gottlieb! [There's real relief in Manolo's voice.] I am glad you two are safe.

[He hesitates at that question, taking a slow breath as he considers what to say. After a moment, he quietly answers:]

Things here...are not so good, no. It's good you left when you did.

They make us watch strange moving pictures, and I...so much of it feels like a dream, but I'm certain that they're--

[Manolo squeezes his eyes shut and shakes his head. It's hard to collect his thoughts.]

They hurt us if we don't say what they want to hear, and Joaquin is starting to act strange. I don't know what to do...

Yes, I.. I asked after Joaquin. He sounded unusually complacent for the situation. What- is there anything..? Porting anyone affected wouldn't be effective or safe at this point. Newton and I are doing our own investigating. We're going to do everything we can to help.

Have the Soviets made any mention of their plans after the Seminar?

I know you're working hard. These things just take time, and everything happened so fast...[This whole week feels like a long, chaotic nightmare that doesn't make much sense in hindsight, and so it's more like an exhausting blur if he tries to recount it.]

No. Nothing. [Manolo's voice is uncharacteristically grim.] They probably want to wear everyone down as much as they can before we find out about whatever they're doing next. I'm worried about what this is doing to Joaquin. [He should probably be worried about what it's doing to him too. His leg keeps twitching, and he's starting to get hit with waves of lethargy when he least expects it.]
